IPL Hair Removal FAQ

Honeypot’s mascot Sex Kitty answers your questions. We currently offer IPL and laser hair reduction services.

Q: What is IPL?

A: Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, works by passing a light beam through the unwanted hair area which is then absorbed by the pigment (colour) within the hair shaft and hair follicle. This generates heat, which disables the hair forming cells and loosens the hair.

Q: Does IPL really work?

A: IPL hair reduction is a safe, cost effective and long term solution for unwanted hair. IPL inhibits hair growth, without the hassle of shaving. It can save you both time and effort in the long run.

Q: Is IPL effective for hair removal? What type of results can I expect after a treatment?

A: You should start to see results of IPL after your third or fourth treatment. Some clients see results just after the first treatment. The average person can expect at least 80% reduction; however, this is dependent on your age, type of hair, hormone levels, whether you have any medical condition or are taking any medication.

Q: How long does IPL last? Are the results permanent?

A: We recommend a course of 6-8 treatments to achieve long term hair reduction results. We do not call IPL/laser permanent hair removal as this is not the FDA’s stance for all IPL and laser hair reduction, hence we call it long term hair reduction. After one course of 6-8 treatments, customers will probably need some form of minimal maintenance at minimal cost to get rid of the residual hair. Customers should be wary of other providers that offer unlimited treatment because if the technology used is effective, you should only be expecting 4-6 treatments for laser hair removal and about 6-8 treatments for IPL hair reduction.

Q: Does hair removal by IPL hurt? Any side effects?

A: The level of discomfort varies between individuals and the different areas being treated. Some people feel nothing, some feel a heat sensation, and some have likened the sensation to mild stinging or the flicking of a rubber band. Generally the coarser or thicker the hair, or the more sensitive the area, the greater the sensation. There is usually some form of skin response post treatment, normally a mild redness (erythema). Honeypot also works with established medical practitioners and if customers want to seek medical advice at their own expense before starting treatment, Honeypot can provide referral to doctors if the customers wish to seek medical opinion.

Q: Can I do IPL and waxing at the same time?

A: You can complement IPL with waxing over a 4-6 weeks interval.

Q:  Why does Honeypot not provide free IPL trial?

Honeypot does not provide free trial for IPL/laser. The machines and all its parts are all from North America and FDA approved. We DO NOT artificially lower the price or give free trial service to entice first time customers to try and then try to sell them things they don’t want. Customers can try our IPL at a discounted price to see if they like it. If they like it, they buy and there are no obligations if they don’t like it. Most places that offer “free” trial services only offers 2 shots in a non sensitive area, which is not indicative of the whole treatment. An alexandrite or a diode laser firing 2 shots vs a full treatment of 15 mins to 1 hour have very different effects as you will not know how effective the treatment is.

Q: Are all laser hair removal providers the same?

A: There has been a proliferation of laser hair reduction providers lately. Along with the relatively relaxed regulations in Hong Kong, this has allowed laser hair reduction treatments to be offered to customers with very little protection or recourse for customers. We advise all customers to exercise caution and ensure you are going to a reputable provider with trained professional before receiving any laser or IPL treatments. Laser hair removal technologies can be very effective but it is VERY powerful and should only be operated by qualified professionals with a lot of experience who know what they are doing. The best technologies are easily available in Hong Kong given the relaxed regulation but that can also mean they can at times fall into the wrong hands with no clinical experience. Be very careful of laser hair removal providers selling hair removal services with the best technologies and having people who do not have requisite experience. The person behind the machine is more important. Burns, PIH (post inflammatory hyper/hypo pigmentation- sometimes permanent), ineffective treatments (treatments that do not kill hair follicles also known as laser shave) can happen for laser hair removal if the practitioner is not experienced. Customers really need a safe pair of hands to handle these high-powered laser machines. There are also a lot of copycat laser and IPL machines without the proper certification and necessary safety standards in the market. Customers should be wary when providers offer laser and IPL treatments at very low prices. Machines built for cost are often compromised in some form, either in terms of safety or performance. Afterall, you get what you pay for and safety comes first. At Honeypot our machines are made in USA and are FDA approved. We have been using a machine that is time tested and relatively painless.

Q: Which machine is the best?

A: There is no one size fits all machine. Machines that claim to be the best doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best for you.  The machine may be considered best because it uses the most powerful technology available, but It can actually be worse off for you if a poorly trained therapist without the requisite knowledge, skill and experience is handling such a powerful machine. This can happen in Hong Kong where there is no regulation on who can buy and operate such machines. Wavelength, fluency, effectiveness, comfort factor, reliability and any burnt case history are all essential considerations in our machine selection process. At Honeypot, we prefer machines that match the skin type with the appropriate wavelength for machines with user friendly GUI interface. The default setting of our machines will match most of our clientele based on skin type, hair colour etc without the need to always do manual adjustments. We already have a sample size of more than 200,000 treatments and the efficacy of these treatments were taken into consideration for our machine procurement. For IPL machines, how good the optics are for the flashlamp, air cooled vs water cooled, and the fluence density are very important considerations. The wavelength spectrum of the IPL handpiece is important for the treatment for different skin types. For laser hair removal in general, the lighter the skin type, the lower the wavelength should be. In general, the best practices would be to use Alexandrite 755nm laser for Caucasian (Type I-II Fitzpatrick skin type), diode (800-810nm) for Mongoloid or darker skin type (Type III-IV and above), and 1064 nm Nd-YAG for dark skin hair removal. We currently have IPL and diode laser (808nm) in our suite of machines and may move into Alexandrite and Nd-YAG in the future as we increase our footprint in Hong Kong. We chose the diode over Alexandrite or Nd-YAG as it caters to our current client mix. At Honeypot, we currently offer hair reduction service with IPL and diode that targets a spectrum of wavelengths for Type I-IV skin. Although there maybe arguments saying IPL is not monochromic and less effective, we believe that the best hair removal provider should have different machines with different wavelength for different situations.

Q: How does Honeypot offer a better IPL service?

A: Apart from being known for our waxing, we have been offering IPL hair removal solution to our diverse clientele. At Honeypot, we have been offering hair removal solutions to over 200,000 clients in Asia for more than a decade. In Hong Kong, we take a more prudent view vs. our competition and we only use technologies that are time tested and more suitable in a salon setting. Clients’ safety comes first.
